A Season of Loss, A Lifetime of Forgiveness

A Season of Loss, A Lifetime of Forgiveness: The Dan Snyder and Dany Heatley story.
AUTHOR: JOHN MANASSO
Summary of the book:This book about two boys from different backgrounds touches on family, forgiveness, sports, and making peace with tragedy. For Dan Snyder, success in the sport he loved never came easy, but it always came. He was not a sure thing in professional hockey, but defied the expectation, playing for the NHLs Atlanta Thrashers. Dany Heatley, on the other hand, had been destined for success from the start as a college star and high draft pick. The two became good friends. In September of 2003, the then 22-year-old Heatley lost control of his Ferrari, while driving down a dangerous Atlanta road. Snyder was thrown from the vehicle and died six days later in hospital after developing an infection and never waking from his a coma. The loss of their teammate, friend, and son sent those who knew Snyder searching for meaning and healing. As the legal story unfolds, so does the story of forgiveness. Even as they watched over their son the hospital, the Snyder's provided emotional support to Dany Heatley. Heatley ended up be fined $3,000, $25,000 for the cost of the investigation, 36 months probation and 750 hours of public service which included giving speeches to local school about safe driving. This is one of my favourite books. I cried numerous times while reading it.
The Tragically Hip wrote a song in remembrance of Dan called "Heaven is a Better Place Now"

Sensgirl,

Great post, I got chills just thinking about that sad, sad story. I didn't realise that it had been made into a book or that the Hip had written a song about it. I think it's amazing that the Snyder family was so forgiving to Heatley; I think they even attended his first game as a Senator. The book is a great example for anyone dealing with feelings of blame after a terrible tragedy.

Great post; you are a talented writer.
